Tennis superstar Serena Williams took to social media on Wednesday to announce she is 20 weeks pregnant.
The 35-year-old American, who has won 23 Grand Slam titles, posted a picture of herself on social media app Snapchat showing a prominent bump with the message “20 weeks”.
Naturally, the news confirms that Williams is set to be out of tennis for a lengthy period. And considering she is already 35, it must also raise the question of whether she will ever return.
The younger of the Williams sisters announced her engagement to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian in December, and it seems motherhood is the natural next step for her. The pair have been dating since 2015.
She has enjoyed an incredible career, dating back more than 18 years when she won her first Grand Slam title at the 1999 US Open.
In January of this year, Williams clinched the record for Open-era major titles after defeating her sister Venus in the Australian Open final.
She needs one more major title to equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 and become the all-time Grand Slam record holder.
